The Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP) is one of the two major political parties in India, along with the Indian National Congress. It is the current ruling political party of the Republic of India, having been so since 2014. The BJP is a right-wing political party, and its policy has historically reflected Hindu nationalist positions. Over the period of the past years critics of the BJP have been writing about a pattern of the growing use of 'Anti - National' in Political Discourse.
BJP Supporters have been accused of framing any form of dissent as anti-national. The BJP denies the accusations that they are arbitrarily using the standard against critics, they mention that they are open to all forms of dissent so long as it is directed at the government and not the sovereignty of the state.
Aam Aadmi Party is a political party in India, whose central policies include free electricity, ater, healthcare and public transport. It styles itself as an alternative to the mainstream BJP and INC. It currently runs the state government in Delhi, having held a majority in the Delhi Legislative Assembly since the 2015 Elections, limiting BJP to a few seats and pushing Congress out entirely. It retained its majority in the 2020 elections.
Formally launched in November 2012, AAP came into existence following differences between activists Arvind Kejriwal and Anna Hazare regarding whether or not to politicize the popular India Against Corruption movement that had been demanding a Jan Lokpal Bill since 2011. Hazare preferred that the movement should remain politically unaligned, while Kejriwal felt the failure of the agitation route necessitated direct political involvement.
As a part of their manifesto – Deputy Chief Minister and Education Minister Manish Sisodia announced that a dedicated ‘Deshbhakti’ (Patriotism) curriculum, which will be launched in Delhi schools soon for students of junior classes. Sisodia, while talking about the new curriculum being introduced in schools, said that the syllabus will be aimed at instilling among children a sense of pride for India and respect for values enshrined in the Constitution. The plan is seen as a part of many other moves from the AAP to style itself as a competing alternative to the BJP. Some opposition parties have continued to criticize the AAP for being ‘B team of the BJP’ or giving in to the trend of ‘populist demands’.
